How to change ball joint on 1995 850 GLT 850

Hello,

I have a 1995 850 GLT and need a new lower ball joint. The Chilton's book says to replace the ball joint itself with just a few bolts. The dealer says that the whole lower control arm assembly needs to be replaced. A parts store tells me that's because the ball joint may be held on by rivets, and I can cut them off and replace the part with bolts.

Has anyone done this before? Can I really just replace the ball joint, or do I need to do the whole control arm?

Thanks,

Brian
