Synthetic Oil VS Traditional Oil S80

I recently purchased a used 2000 s80 with 60,000 miles and was considering putting in a synthetic oil. I normally change the oil on my cars at or close to 3,000 miles. I have checked out the price of mobil one and found that I would be paying more than double the price for synthetic over the castral GX that I normally buy. How many miles should I go between oil changes with synthetic? Does anyone have any good reasons to use one over the other?
