Check Engine Light S70 1997

The CEL is on and staying on. I thought it was because I was in a hurry getting home the other night and only put $5 in my tank when the low fuel light was on. The CEL light came on the next morning. I read in my manual it may be the gas cap - so it took it off and put it back on making sure to replace correctly. I also filled the tank with 93 octane thinking perhaps I purchased some bad gas. I have driven the car for 25K and this is the first time it has come on. The car does have 208K on it. I think it does smell a bit like sulfur - but that could be my mind looking for something. One thing I have noticed since this light has come on - is that the electric cooling fan comes on when I start the car. I don't think I remember that happening prior to the CEL being on. Any ideas out there????
