Rims 850 1996

i have a spare set of 740 rims and i was wondering if they will fit on a 1996 850. because on the board it said that 850 rims (with spacers) will fit a 740 so why cant 740 rims work with 850's? logically if you think of it they should be reversible, right? i understand the front not fitting b/c of steering, but will it fit the rear?
