automatic transmission 850

my transmission is starting to give me trouble (it has jerked a couple of times, struggling in low gear, but it has only done this a couple of times and typically runs fine) . I have a 97, 88K miles
any advise on what to do? I figure I can have it rebuild for about $1700 or try to get a used transmission on EBAY and have my mechanics install it, which would be around $1200 or $1300. A new transmission would be outrageous. Any other thoughts, suggestions or pitfalls to avoid?
