Checking Engine light and Service light 850 1994

My 1994 850 Automatic has had the Service light on for a number of years. A mechanic told me that it had nothing to do with engine mechanics but as an indicator for an oil change. So I let it stay on. The drivability hasn't suffered.

Recently the Check Engine light is on. Now I am more concerned.

The car has 158,000 miles on it and runs very well. At 60,000 miles, the drive belt was replaced. At 80,000 miles the inline filter was put in. At 90,000 miles, the timing belt was replaced. Spark plugs were replaced at 40,000 mile intervals. Other routine maintenance items have been done on schedules.

How do I turn off the Check Engine light and the Service light?

Thanks.
