'93 850 Changer installation Problems 850

I installed an Alpine changer compatable with my stock stereo w/ changer controlsin a '93 850 GLT and I get no response from the head unit. When I push the "CD" button, nothing happens. Re-checked all connections and even reconnected the power lead on the adapter to no avail. I know the changer is receiving electricity as it loads a cd and ejects the cartridge, both which require power. Any thoughts are much appreciatted.
