Fob Won't Unlock/Lock doors 850 1995

I recently purchased a 1995 plain jane 850 wagon. The fob won't lock/unlock the doors and the head/tail lights don't flash when button is pushed. I tried turning the key 5 times leaving it on the fifth an pushing the fob button and it seemed to program (Long flash of the light) but still it doesn't lock/unlock the doors and the head/tail lights don't flash. The Volvoguard manual being in swedish doesn't help much either. I've read the posts from May 15 irt this issue, but his seemed to work after the programming sequence. I have committed to doing all maintenance on this car myself but there doesn't seem be much I can do here.
All help is much appreciated.
