Rob, What you assumed is probably close to what happened. The "Off" implies they tried to enter the code 3 times and missed it. Assuming you know the code, you have to leave the ignition on for some hours, ( I forgot how many) until the radio says "Code". A battery charger should be hooked up for this period to keep the battery OK. Then enter the code. If you don't have the code, your local dealer can get it with the car VIN # if original radio, or the radio nubmers (pop the radio to see label) if not original radio.
