time for new battery S40-V40

I assume the cranking sounded sluggish? It could be the battery, but could also be other things (alternator, etc.). A good battery should last about 5-7 years, but certainly can be less, especially if water level is not maintained in all cells. Many places, like Sears, offer a free no obligation diagnostic of your charging system, including battery condition.
