Scared about engine on my 850 850 1997

has the timing belt been changed at 60K like volvo recommends? There is a hydraulic type belt tensioner with a pully that keeps the timing belt tight, it may be failing causes the moaning noise, does the sound get louder as the engine revs faster?

If the timning belt fails it will cost you tons of money to fix it. If you can not find service records or proof of it being changed, do it tomorrow!!!!

IS your car a turbo? this is also be a source of the moan, the turbo may have a bearing going out and after if warms up and gets good oil flow the sound gets better. If you have a turbo do you use Synthetic oil like Mobil1?
