With all the wires described, it would make sens that this is a turn-on
usually, turn-on is positive but...

did you ever checked resistance between the purple wire and the 12V power input? (the 12 volts is ignition on only? right?) maybe you are dealing with a turn-on relay (12 volt ignition being connected internally with the other side of the coil)
you would see low resistance between the two and hot when ignition is on on the purple.
I would probably put a 200ohm resistance at the end of the purple and ground the other end of the resistor(just to see if amp would turn-on while pulling a safe 60mA through ground) or even 100ohm if I would feel a little more brave(most of the time!)but thats just me

If it was transistor based, positive would come from an internal pullup and negative would be required again.
Unless the purple is data (I really dont think so)
