I recently did my 94. If you're gonna keep the car and do the tape route, I would personally skip the electrical tape and go for real automotive striping. You'll need 3m 3/4 inch black striping. I got mine at napa. The only problem is that you have to buy a big roll and it's about 28.00. You'll have leftovers to share with other 850 owners. Far superior to electrical tape though.
I cut both sides of the rail so that the rubber was left and the original black was left through the 90degree corner. It sounds weired but look at it. The 3/4 inch tape is not wide enough to hang over the sides of the aluminum rail, so i just slightly overlapped it with the tape. Yes, you will see a ridge where the old black is under the new tape, but I assure you , if you do it carefully the only person who will ever notice it is you. Buy a bunch of blades and change them often. then carefully chip away (toward the center of the trim, not toward the outside) the remaining black. I sanded the rest with fine 600ish grit sandpaper. I also masked the paint on each side of the rubber with a couple widths of masking tape just in case my sandpaper strayed. If your rails are blown out to the point where the black on the 90 degree corners is wasted you might want to consider going with the 1 inch tape (although I have no experience with this) because the 3/4 may not totally cover it.
It took me about 3 hours. Don't rush and it will look good.
