you are close to the goal.
You might not see direct continuity to ground when you test in the REM with your meter. Who knows what the "turn-on" negative output consist off in the REM. Maybe in this case you are dealing with a floating transistorized one (??). The best tool you could use for testing is a simple LED with a 330ohm resistor. (it will mimic the input of the amp). Connect the LED's anode to 12V, the cathode to the resistance and use other end of the resistance as test probe. This will "pull" small amount of current, therefore safe and the LED will definetly guide you with brightness. If it is transistorized or not, the LED will work both ways.
I'm being very descriptive with simple electronic basics as I dont know how much electronic knowledge you have, far away from wanting to insult your intelligence, I just want to help.
