Removal of trim panel on rear hatch 850

My wife's 850 has an annoying rattle in the rear. My plan to find/eliminate the rattle was the remove all contents and remove the interior trim panel. I was stymied when I got all the clips unclipped (some broken, replacement ready). But the panel still would not come off. Something in the vicinity of the internal hatch release is still holding the panel in place. I started to remove the lever (not easy) and decided to find out whether I was on the wrong track before going any further, since it looked as though that might not do any good anyway.

Can anyone provide the secret to removing that panel? Help would be greatly appreciated.
