850 Engine Compatibility 850

Hm,

I'm not trying to fit an Aston Martin engine!

I thought that 850 engines 1992-1997 were all extremely similar [apart from bore, number of valves, turbo or none].

So, I'm wondering if anyone knows if I can unbolt a 10 valve non turbo 2.5 from my 1993 850 sedan and bolt back in a 20 valve non turbo 2.5 within that same date range? I'm not worried about engine accessories- rather, the big things like will the tranny fit, the engine mounts etc? I am assuming the ECU would go with the engine type as the extra valves would affect required mixture ratios etc etc.

What should I look out for? Anyone done it?

The alternative is to recondition the engine myself. I have done the heads on a V6 265 and have fully reconditioned older engines 10+ years ago. Anyone who has done an 850 [top and bottom end] who is prepared to comment on how much time it took them?

Cheers,
Dave
