are 850 turbos supposed to be noisy? 850

I just purchased my first front wheel drive volvo a 1996 850 turbo wagon with 89,000 miles. All service is current and has been performed by the dealership since new. When driving there is a considerable amout of noise coming from the engine compartment. It seems to be from the drive train and not from the motor. Cv joint boots look good, and noise does not change when turning. I don't now how to explain it other than it seems excesive. Are the transmissions in these cars just a little bit noisier than most. Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance Mike
