Best used brick to buy?

My wife wants a different Volvo than the 94 960 she now has. I've owned 140, 160, 240, numerous 740's and the 960 but have never had a fwd. I'm not interested in speed. The best Volvos form me were the 140 and 240. The 960 is fantastic on the freeway but has way too much automatic crap on it (which I know I can't avoid on newer cars). I don't even know the difference between the newer cars except that the s40 is a 4 banger and I assume the others are 6s. Who likes what best and why? I won't buy a new one but one that's 2 or 3 years old.
