serpentine belt size? 850

I have a 93 850glt.My belt tension mechanisim seems to shake about and is noisy at idle.. I refered to my repair manual as to the routeing of the belt on my model.The belt on the car was installed different than what my book called out for a 1993. After threading my belt on according to the model year I had no tension on the belt when the mechanisim was relesed. So I used the routing scheme of a later model and have tension now. Is the belt length critical to the model year in order for the belt tensioner to run quietly? My mechanic had changed out the timing belt and water pump this past summer and I suspect he had installed the wrong serpentine belt at that point. Also why would my repair manual refer to this other routeing as a update ? Mike
