Pela Oil Extractor Pump for an 850 850

Recently I checked the oil on my mother's 95 850 and it didn't register on the dipstick. I added about a quart and a half and that brought it up about 3/4 of the way to the full mark. The car was due for an oil change, 3500 miles since the last one. I thought I would do it myself and bought one of those Pela Oil Extractor Pumps. I tried to suck out most of the oil but I could only get about 1.5 liters (about 1.5 quarts). I thought maybe the car had just burned alot of oil but then after changing the filter I only had to add 3 quarts before it was at or slightly above the full mark. Did I just not suck enough oil out in the first place? I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the Pela or any other extractor pump. Thanks in advance.
