850 Side Air Bags 850

I am having a second child and have been told not only by my local dealer but also Volvo of North America that I cannot put car seats on each side of the rear seat in my 850 due to the side air bags in the front two seats. Both say that if I want to keep a Volvo I will have to upgrade to the S60 or S80. I though the side air bags deployed forward in a side impact? Can anyone shed some light on this? I'd love to purchase a used S80 but want to keep my 850, I love the car. Are they blowing smoke at me to get me to buy a newer Volvo?
