Power Steering Pump V70-XC70 2001

After myfather noticed something leaking from my car onto the driveway, I had it inspected by a local mechanic (Volvo told me they couldn't look at it for 2 weeks.) I have been told that the power steering pump is leaking and needs to be replaced to the tune of $900 Cdn. (for the part alone.) The mechanic also told me that the 2001 V70 has had this problem. Since Volvo won't even look at it until the end of the month, and I want it covered under warranty, I am forced to drive around with a container of power steering fluid so that the level can be topped up until the part is replaced. The car is exactly 3 years old with only 33,000 miles on it. It was purchased in the US but is being driven in Canada which explains why I'm getting Canadian quotes. I'm frustrated... Has anyone else had this problem? What kind of customer service would have me waiting 3 weeks for an appointment? Is it safe to be driving around this way until I can get it fixed? I have two children who are in the car with me and I frequently drive back to the US.
