half-a-stereo 850 1994

My 850 has a great sound system and Alpine CD changer, unfortunately only the the driver's side speakers work unless you turn it way up and fiddle with the volume knob. Previous owner said something about cleaning it temporarily helping. Anyone familiar with this problem or know a way to fix it?
