Your oil consumption is not awful--it would be regarded as "within acceptable usage" in a new car.

If you are not using synthetic oil, at least some of this can be attributed to evaporation of the oil at high temperatures. even synthetic will evaporate to some extent. For explanation and comparison of some different oils, go to amsoil.com and click on "what's new".
