get my bearings? 850

Hi All, I have a suspect humming noise coming from my front drivers' side tire. It came about after I had a bad mechanic shop replace the old cv axle and he broke the lower support arm because he was using a pry bar to pry out the old axle, this caused them to have to get one from a junkyard. Now, I don't know if he retightened the main hub bolt (?) too tightly or if it was the part they replaced it with, but I have had this humming noise for at least 5 mos. I've gone through another set of tires, so I know it's not them making the noise. Is there any way to visually inspect the bearings to tell if they're shot? Secondly, do I have to replace the whole hub, or just the bearings? Are they expensive, and is it just a matter of doing like you do when replacing the rotors (taking appart the hub and putting it back together again)? Thanks
