starter replacement 850 1996

oh my god, took 6 hrs my old starter was a pile of rust, so heres my question volvo gave me a bracket and the bracket would not fit on starter. so we left starter on car with no bracket, when i took the old starter back to volvo for core and asked about the bracket all they said is volvo requires it, well they could not produce a bracket that fits. so do you think this is ok. also had to replace a rear caliper it was a pile of rust and had to get the blow torch to get it off. how often do these parts go bad? the car has 140 k miles on it. with the pnp switch replacement as well it has cost me about 2k this month. the car came from huntington new york and im wondering now about how much salt the car was exposed to. sorry for rambling. kelly
