Different size tires on V70 XC AWD V70-XC70 1998

I ran two different size rear tires on my V70 AWD XC and heard some loud cluncking then smelled gear oil. When I put two identical size back on, all runs okay. No signs of leaks so any clue what I may damaged and whether I am heading for a major problem?
