Angle/bevel gear going? How can you tell? V70-XC70

Am thinking of buying a 98 or 99 FWD GLT V-70, but my options this time of the year seem limited in that category. Have read on the board about the problems with the AWD and how expensive it is to replace the bevel gear. How can you tell if you take an AWD out for a test drive if the bevel gear is starting to go? Is there a sensor code that would tell you? Some of the AWD's in the 80-100K mile range are very attractively priced. Is it worth taking a chance if you're looking to get 200K out of it or should I wait until a low mileage GLT comes up? Advice, please.
