My car is a V70R AWD 99/2000 european edition (2,4l with 265hp)
Last week the check engine light came on, and as the car was going in for a wheel alignment the same week and asked them to check the error code. The error code that was pulled was ECM4801 - intermittent failing catalyst efficiency (got the error code in swedish, so the translation might be somewhat different from english message), nothing was done since the error was intermittent. But I also requested them to download any new software if there were any, ECM and TCM was updated.
The next week the error came back, and since I've just owned a exactly same V70R AWD with the same milage (55000 km) where the MAF failed, I suspected that. The MAF costs about $75 in Norway, so it a lot more expensive to search for MAF related errors than to change it. But after driving about 400km in one run, the error code came back - this time I haven't had a chance to read the code.
The car idles fine, the motor seems normal, acceleration is even and nothing is alarming about the drivability in general. But the car seems to lack some power, like someone stole at least 50 horsepowers from me. Fuel efficiency is normal too. What I've noticed, is a resonating sound on relatively low rpm in certain situation coming from beneath the car, in about the same area as the cat.
Do I have any reason to suspect a failing or clogged cat? Is there any other places I should start searching first?
How can I find out if the cat is dead?
I haven't got to work on the car yet, but plan to do it tomorrow.
