I own a Subaru '99 SUS limited edition as well as a '98 V70 AWD and am therefore quite qualified to comment on the two cars you mention. Both are excellent in the snow. As you are likely aware, putting snow tires on a FWD car is definitely NOT the same as AWD in terms of winter traction. People often overlook the AWD advantage in the summer as well.

My Subaru has been less expensive to maintain than the Volvo. I am meticulous with my vehicle care. The comfort and ride of the Volvo can't be beat. I wouldn't take my Volvo off-road, but my Subie takes me mountain biking and on forest road jaunts without a worry. I am concerned about AWD issues I have read about the Volvo drivetrain so my tires are rotated every 5K miles and are evenly worn. The Subie and Volvo have 77K and 72K miles respectively.

If I had to do it over, I would buy the Volvo again, but probably a Subie WRX (though they weren't available when I bought mine).
