If is much more likely that this is coincidental, and overfilling by a bit didn't make any problems. Assume that the check engine light is amber (not red). That could by caused by leaving the gas cap loose. Mor likely, from the sound of it, there is a vacuum leak or a bad sensor somewhere.

Personal opinion--you'd be better off with a good synthetic than with a quart of Lucas in non-synthetic.
