Dunno about the other stuff, but if the temp gauge operates normally it's probably not the thermostat. If you pull up the driver's side floor mat and there's a puddle of coolant underneath the mat there's probably a leaky heater core.

There is also a damper lever for the fresh air intake door that tends to work off the shaft or break, see the brickboard archives. http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/index.htm?id=160823 If it fails open that would keep the cabin temperature low.
