Thermostat V70-XC70

My 98 5 T AWD heater is not pumping out much heat(mind you it is minus 30 plus wind chill). The guage is below half yet has always run half regardless of this and lower temps.This is the obvious thermostat I expect,true?. Question is, are all thermo's the same quality? I went to buy one from a jobber on my sons GSR. It was the wrong one ($28) so went to Accura where he had to pay $55. We objected (as did he )so he showed me the oem. I was impressed, much heavier spring and base. He reported that jobbers last < 1 year. Is this the same for us as well ?
