Which code reader to buy? Hand held or Alex Peper's software and a PC? V70-XC70

I bought Peper's software, and should have bought all the vehicles links. I just got the ISO for the Volvo and I also opted for the for GM. It also clears the CEL codes but not the SERVICE LIGHT !
Cheap and works well for all I want to do.... but not compact since you have to have a laptop. My low end laptop is all I need. lots of wires and connectors when you're sitting in the divers seat (especially me since my laptop battery has to be pugged into an outlet as my diagnostics takes a while.)
Have fun either way,
D~
