Sluggish start-Not starting-850-R 850 1996

Trying to get some opinions on what might have gone wrong. My 850 was working well and over the last week or so started to become more sluggish as it started. Finally, yesterday it stopped starting after it made some clunking noises. Now, the starter turns over fine, but the motor will not engage. I thought it might be a weak battery, but hooked up a portable battery jumper and it did the same thing (only a bit stronger because of the extra battery boost). Not sure where to start but could use some opinions. Thanks.
