stereo problems, help! 850

I just bought a 94 850 wagon, it's been very well maintained and I really love it. However there is one problem that I want to fix but want to make sure I investigate the correct problem. When you turn the volume knob on the stereo, with each 'click' there is a static sound and the speakers on the passenger side go in and out. If I jiggle the knob a bit the speakers will go back on (sometimes still cut out). I want to replace the problem but unsure if it's the radio or the speakers I should be looking to replace. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.
