transmission clunk in reverse 850

When I shift into reverse, the transmission (auto) makes a loud and forceful clunk. It will not do this if I (while driving forward still) bumb the gear into neutral then make after stopping shift into reverse. No, I never change gears while moving with the exception of shifting into neutral and the fluid has been changed yearly with sythetic. Also the car shifts fine in all forward gears. any ideas??
