P0116 Error Message. Please help!!! V70-XC70 1998

I have a Check Engine light coming on. I went to AutoZone and got the P0116 code. This is the second time I recieved this code. The first time was about a year ago, and I replaced the engine temp sensor ($50+ part!) and the light went off. I can't really see that part going out twice (isn't it just a simple therostat?). Does anybody have any cheaper suggestions? The wires are not damaged and are plugged in well. The thermostat? One thing to note is that it came on during the first really cold day we had this year. Any help would be very much appreciated!
