frozen blower syndrome - warning! 2001

The northeast freeze has taken a toll. our local dealer has been barraged with what they say is a "never before seen" rash of frozen blower motors. My 03 S60 was fine on the way to work, but after nine hours of 1 degree weather the blower was locked tight. I drove straight to the dealer (I have just over 5k on it) where in the lobby the service manager was on the phone with another frozen blower motor customer, and then a few moments later another one customer with the same problem walks in.

They all have '01 and newer HVAC.

I have owned 12 cars over the years and have NEVER seen a blower system freeze.

What happened to Volvo's nordic pedigree? HOw could as lame a system as this be designed into what is supposed to be a fine automobile?

Anyone have any ideas of what intern Ford sent to Volvo to design a heater that freezes? It's as maddening as an umbrella that shouldn't be used in the rain.

We Volvo owners deserve better.
