Do I need to drain coolant? 850 1996

My 855T needs a new thermostat (typical symptoms - gauge not at 3pm, heat not hot enough, etc.).

If my engine is cold, do I still need to drain the coolant at all? The coolant was already drained within the past year. I figure it's just taking out the old one and replacing with the new one, but I've read both ways in search and bay 13 re: draining the coolant.

I don't want to take it to a shop, but it's not easy for me to get under the car for draining. I know, that's a lame excuse, but I don't want to get under the car raised by a skimpy jack, and don't have the ramps just yet.

TIA
