Clatter in V70 LP turbo V70-XC70

I have a 1998 LP Turbo V70 AWD and it just started making a ticking clattering sound out of the exhuast manifold. I hear the sound more loudly in front of the engine. The car has 68,000 miles and I was wondering if the oil level is low. What is the best time to check the level (cold or warm.) I have an 850 that had a similar sound and I now change the oil every 3000 miles to make sure I have no problems. Are there any issues with these LP turbos that would produce this clatter from the manifold?

Thanks
