"Is it really necessary?" No. The ECM will make adjustments accordingly. Having said that, I now put in High-Octane in both my '82 240 and '94 850 as both have considerable mileage. The "cleaner" burning fuel helps make up for the aging engines that have years of carbon, dirt, sludge and whatever buildup. Prior to this last year, I put in the "cheapest" gas I could find, not to be confused with "dirty" gas.
