Transmission stuck in winter mode 850 1994

My car is having a new problem. When I start the car up, half the time it is stuck in winter mode and won't shift below 3rd gear. Not very easy to drive around. Just wondering if anyone has a solution that doesn't require me taking the car in to a shop. Thank you.
