1997 V40 dies in hot weather S40-V40

I have a 97 V40 that has twice left me stranded by the side of the road. Both times it was in very hot weather but I don't know if that was just coincidence. It feels like the engine slowly gets its fuel supply stopped until it eventually stalls. Won't start, or if it starts, idles very very rough and then stalls again. I left it on the side of the road and came back the next morning and it started first go and ran beautifully. does anyone know what might be going on?
