Need help IDing that whinning noise 850 1996

Ive got a '96 855 NA. There is a whinning noise that comes from the front drivers side of the engine. It only happens every once in while and sounds like a little motor spooling up, starting with a low pitch and getting gradually higher. Start to finish the sounds lasts less than 10 seconds. Checking the BB archives I'm guessing it's the air pump however no check engine light comes on. Have I got a problem here or is it standard operation for this engine in 35-45 deg F weather?
