'86 740 GLE Wagon on last legs, what to replace it with?

Our '86 740GLE Wagon (non-turbo) barely passed the California smog test two years ago, and today my Volvo repair shop could not get it to pass - "not even close" they say. This car had over 100K on it when we got it, and it now has 275K. It has been the most reliable car we've EVER had. I hate to get rid of it, but the transmission is getting marginal and the interior is falling apart (amongst other things)...

My question is: Is there a Volvo Wagon of newer vintage that has comparable reliability? Pros & Cons of RWD vs. FWD/AWD? I don't want to spend more than 15K, so the newest models are out...thanks in advance for your advice!
