Blower motor has problems in 'auto' mode S70

My blower motor does not come on when the fan switch is in "auto" mode. It takes anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes to come on. It works fine in "manual" mode. Once it comes on in "auto" mode, it works perfectly. If I turn off the car, the blower motor will work in "auto" mode if it has only been off for an hour or two. Any longer, and it won't come on until after some period of time.

The system never faults, so the dealer doesn't know what to replace. Of course, by the time I drive to the dealer it works fine.

It started off not working when it was really cold out, but now it seems the norm regardless of the tempature.

Any ideas on what to look for or replace?

Thanks.
