How accurate is 'distance to empty'? 850

On serveral occasions I have run my '94 850 Turbo wagon down to 10 miles. On one occasion it went into a "limp home" mode, causing a check engine light to come on and it felt like it was running on 3 cylinders. I made it to the nearest gas station and once I filled the tank, the engine ran fine. I reset the check engine light and life was normal again. On other occasions I have gotten down to 10 miles to go and not had a problem. I think that is because it bases the 'distance to empty' on the miles per gallon you are getting at the time the light comes on and variances may not be re-calculated. I don't let it get down to 10 miles to go anymore.
Good luck.
