Synthetic or Petroleum in Turbo Volvo V70-XC70

I have a new 2004 V70 2.5T with sport and premium package. It moves and corners like a scalded cat. I am impressed.

Volvo suggests Castrol 10W30 petroleum oil but suggests that I use synthetic oil if I operate under severe conditions - like pulling a trailer.

Does it make sense to use synthetic for normal city and highway driving or would I just be spending extra money?

The current oil change interval is 7500 miles - which seems a little long to me. Is it reasonable to ask petro oil to last for 7500 miles?

2004 V70s get free oil changes from Volvo but synthetic is an extra charge.

What do all of you do with oil changes?
