Rolling backwards in Drive V70-XC70

Forgive the post if this topic has been covered or appears naive. My 04 V70 2.5T, when stopped on a hill, in drive, rolls backward if I take my foot off of the brake. I understand the computer puts the car in neutral for efficiency and to lower engine wear, but this seems a fairly big safety problem. The dealer tells me that all the 03 and 04 Volvos he has driven--except the V and S40's-- do this, although he was unaware of the peculiarity until I brought it to his attention. In 30 odd years of driving, this is the first car I've had that doesn't lock in drive when sitting on a hill.
Any replies or experiences appreciated.
